Sava Šumanović Gallery — Exhibition Design & Art Direction
An exhibition bringing Sava Šumanović’s paintings into dialogue with contemporary Šid. Visual identity, exhibition graphics and editorial design connect artworks, photographs and participatory experiences across three gallery rooms.
The catalogue continues the exhibition’s conversation beyond the gallery. Its accordion format places paintings and contemporary photographs in direct dialogue, allowing several comparisons to be viewed at once.
The zigzag fold echoes the exhibition table and the sequence of rooms. The same rhythm moves between paper and space: unfolding the catalogue becomes another way of travelling through the exhibition.
The cover introduces this journey through nested photographic frames, gradually drawing the reader into Šid.
My Role
Working closely with the gallery team, I developed a visual language connecting the exhibition’s narrative, printed materials and visitor experience.
A Conversation Across Time
How do we see a place through someone else’s eyes?
The exhibition places Šumanović’s painted landscapes alongside archival and contemporary photographs of Šid. Visitors are invited to recognise familiar places, notice transformations and move between the artist’s perspective and their own.
A Visual Language of Frames
Nested frames create a recurring visual motif, suggesting successive viewpoints and inviting the viewer to look further into the image.
Clear typography, warm neutral tones and restrained gold accents connect the exhibition graphics and catalogue while giving the artworks room to breathe.
Visitors Become Participants
Interactive cubes and cutout panels invite visitors to change their viewpoint, explore images and become part of the exhibition.
A wall for messages, drawings and photographs extends the conversation, making space for the ways people see and experience Šid today.
Three Rooms, an Unfolding Narrative
The visitor journey develops through three landmarks: the Church of Saint Nicholas, the Linden Alley and the Old Brickworks.
The first room introduces a quieter encounter with the paintings. The second invites exploration and interaction. The third brings participation to the foreground, opening the exhibition to play and personal expression.
Bringing a Painting to Life
Šumanović’s Three Girls finds a contemporary echo through Iris, Sofija and Senka, who recreated the scene.
Presented alongside the painting, their photograph connects the artist’s work with a new generation. A hopscotch floor invites children and adults to bring movement and play into the gallery.
A Story That Continues
The exhibition invites visitors to return to Šid with a different awareness: to recognise a painted view in a familiar street, notice what has changed and consider what remains.
The conversation continues outside the gallery, through the catalogue and through each visitor’s own view of the town.
